Winter and Summer Steelhead Overlap During April at Winchester Dam
April is a transitional month on the North Umpqua River. Both late winter steelhead and early returning summer steelhead are migrating upstream, and the very first spring chinook are starting to arrive. We will be updating our species count posts to reflect these observations, particularly given current river flows and temperatures that are running more like May than April. ODFW's official statistical count estimate program uses April 30 as the cutoff for winter steelhead totals, which includes early summer steelhead observed in their random sample counts.
