Unprecedented Steelhead Passage at Winchester Dam

The Winchester Dam winter steelhead upstream migration on February 8th, 2026, was an all-time record-high daily count with 924 steelhead recorded. There was also one trout observed during this 24-hour period. The highest hourly count was 121 fish around 3 PM, which included 39 steelhead passing upstream in just 15 minutes. For comparison, the total daily steelhead count for the Columbia River on that day was 14, and for the entire Willamette basin was 90 fish. This recent migration behavior is influenced by various factors including water temperature and flow fluctuations; travel times and distance within the river; and the fishway not affecting the timing or success of normal upstream river migration by a healthy fish population that exhibits complex genetic variation. NOTE: These up-to-date actual counts at Winchester Dam are only available through the Umpqua Fishery Enhancement Derby’s project volunteers and donations provided by our partners. ODFW has discontinued daily fish counts and similar scientific data, and are not available to the interested public and agencies in a timely manner.
