The UmpquaFish Project is celebrating our 2-months old "Launch day" today and we are very thankful for all of your support. We even have a QR code, bumper stickers, and decals available now. We had over 40,436 visitors to our website during this time with more supporters joining every day. Our project is just in its "alevin" stage with lots more planned for the next few months. 100-year record low flows combined with very high summertime water temperatures. Only wild summer steelhead are present in the river now since hatchery program was eliminated. Yet the same groups that say they want to protect this wild fish population are continuing to increase the prespawning mortality rate by hooking and releasing these fish throughout the day, every day.

First Spring Chinook Appears on March 24th

March was another great month for fish returning to the North Umpqua River. Not only did 4,000 winter steelhead pass upstream to add to the current total count of over 10,000, a few early spring chinook migrated through the fish ladder. The first one was a beautiful large fish and arrived on March 24th. This springer will find a quiet, deep pool in the river to hold during its no-food diet until September when it will spawn in a nearby gravel riffle.
