The Umpqua Fishery Enhancement Derby (UFED) has become one of the premier events of its kind in the Pacific Northwest. All money raised goes toward fish enhancement/restoration projects and fish educational opportunities in the Umpqua Basin. UFED has contributed more than $1.9 million in matching funds toward hundreds of projects over the past thirty years. The 2022 Derby event alone raised more than $100,000 to invest in the Umpqua.

The Derby began as two-day guided fishing trips with about 75 local participants attending a dinner and auction in a small motel conference room and raised $7000 for projects. Over the past 30 years UFED has grown into a popular four-day event with hundreds of sponsors and donors from all around the state joining us in support of Umpqua Basin fish populations and angling opportunities. The UFED Dinner/Auction and Derby Fishing Teams are sold-out early, with more sponsors always welcome.

UFED is proud of the gracious funding-support dedicated to the hundreds of projects that have been completed in the Umpqua basin and are excited to reach the 2-million- dollar goal of donated funds since 1993 to continue these enhancement and education activities.

Each year our Derby event runs from Wednesday through Saturday the end of January/first of February. The event begins with "Student Day: Project Fish" on Wednesday where 25-30 high school students spend a day on a Rock Creek watershed tour with local natural resources specialists. "Kids Day" is on Thursday where fifth grade students from a local elementary school are treated to a morning of fishing on Cooper Creek Reservoir with our Derby Guides, North River jet boat rides, and outdoor lunch as recognition for a hatchery program on their school campus and year-round lessons about fish. The catch-and-release winter steelhead fishing takes place on Friday and Saturday on the North, South, and Main Umpqua rivers. The Derby draws fishermen from throughout Oregon and the best fishing guides in Southern Oregon. Thursday evening is a Crab Feed and raffle for the “Fishing Teams” and their sponsors.

Our annual UFED Banquet and Auction takes place on Friday evening at the Fairgrounds. This has become one of the most popular events in Douglas County with an attendance of over 600 people. This is the major fund-raising event for our projects and offers the attendees many opportunities to bid on several oral and silent auction items, raffle items, and always enjoy a fun gathering with great food and drinks.

The Umpqua Fishery Enhancement Derby’s fish count is usually updated on a weekly basis. The total counts include summer steelhead that started on May 1st and spring chinook on February 1st. These up-to-date counts are very popular with our LiveCam viewers and have important information related to fisheries and fish population status. ODFW fish counts are estimates only and updated on their website five times a year. Their last total estimate count for spring chinook was through April 30th, over 3 months ago. There is no ODFW summer steelhead count estimate for the 2025 run through July yet.

What's so special about this winter steelhead counted on March 10th at 8:05 PM by our project? It is the 8,000th fish for the 2025-26 North Umpqua River return and reported just a day after it occurred. There will be several more steelhead migrating upstream to spawn over the next several weeks to count and update for everyone. The total count could reach 10,000 by the end of April and be one of the highest number for this population in recent years. Thank you for watching our LiveCam Video.

Spring weather is here and that means Spring Chinook will arrive in the next few days. The water temperature just hit 50 degrees for the first time in 2026, which is a great predictor for the arrival of the first springer in the North Umpqua River.

Are you watching... 12 steelhead passing through the fish ladder in just 15 minutes. This year’s returns continue to be very high numbers and it is still 60 days away from the end of the migration period. A great start to the month of March.

New Live Fish Chart Features Added

The North Umpqua River winter steelhead strong returns continued last week with over 1500 fish counted. The mid-season number of steelhead to date is now over 5,000. Early predictions estimate the total runsize will be well over 8,000 fish by the end of April.

Mid-Season Steelhead Count Tops 5000

Another great day to watch several hundred winter steelhead move upstream through the fish ladder at Winchester Dam on the North Umpqua River. With almost 500 fish counted on February 10th and more observed yesterday, the 2026 steelhead return is now over 3,500 and not even halfway through the normal run timing for this population. There is no winter steelhead hatchery program for the North Umpqua and only a very small number of fish stray from the South Umpqua River hatchery smolt release.
